Editing and Rewriting

"In novel writing, editing is King and proofreading is Queen."
--Jenny Hansen

September has been another tough month. I couldn't get enough, editing and rewriting Girl of the Book. It's really mentally draining. Whenever I think I'm done, I always find something that I left out.

The copyeditor sent back the manuscript on September 17. I accepted her changes and rewrote parts of the manuscript, as per her recommendation. Even after I sent the manuscript for proofreading on the 24th of September, I still found a few mistakes and wished I hadn't sent it earlier. Grrr...hopefully the proofreader will fix that. Still, I might need to make a few changes after the manuscript is sent back.

This whole editing and proofreading thing is such a long process I wonder how some authors write a novel and get it published in just three weeks. I've been working on Girl of the Book since September 2013, and I feel like there is more I can do to make the manuscript better. OK, maybe 12 months is nothing because I have read about authors who had spent more than five years writing a single novel. Worth it? In some cases, yes. Check out some books such as Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone and The Help, which took the authors about five years to complete.
